California city prepping for US$3bn town square redevelopment

The City of Santa Ana, California, US, located about 30-miles southeast of Los Angeles in Orange County, received city council approval on 1 October to redevelop a 41-acre site on the city’s south side at a projected cost of US$3 billion.

The mixed-use development is overseen by Related California and project-specific Related Bristol, affiliates of New York-based real estate firm Related Companies. The firm called the scheme the “largest private investment” in the city’s history.

The site, known as Callens Common and Metro Town Square, will see construction of new housing up to 3,750 units, more than 300,000 sq ft of retail space, redeveloped open spaces across 13 acres and a 250-room hotel.

Work is expected to roll out in three phases, with the first stage expected to break ground in 2026. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2036.

Contractor details for the build were not yet available.
