John Deere implements SmartDetect on utility and production loaders

US-based construction and agriculture equipment manufacturer John Deere said its sensing and awareness technology, SmartDetect, has been integrated with its utility- and production-class loaders as a means to increase safety and situational awareness on the job site.

SmartDetect uses a suite of advanced detection and vision solutions, including cameras, radar and machine-learning technology, that helps identify and classify known objects, like people, poles, structures and other machinery. It was first debuted in early 2023 at ConExpo.

“SmartDetect is a crucial addition to our portfolio of precision construction technology solutions, designed to help operators confidently navigate and maximise productivity on busy construction sites,” said Katie Voelliger, product marketing manager at John Deere.

Features of the SmartDetect system include a dedicated rearview high-resolution monitor, a rear stereo camera for added depth perception, and visual categorisation of object and obstacle types. Sound cues will also tip off operators when an object or person is detected by the technology.

Nathan Demski, jobsite safety product manager at John Deere, said, “Operators work long days and it’s not easy for them to remain at the peak of situational awareness throughout the day. SmartDetect is another tool in the toolbox that they can use to help improve their confidence and be more aware of what’s around them on the jobsite.”

The company said field kits to incorporate SmartDetect are available for select utility- and production-class loader models already equipped with the John Deere Advanced Vision System and Advanced Object Detection technology.
