Vinci subsidiary to design and build LNG tank for GATE expansion

Vinci Construction Grands Projets, a subsidiary of Vinci Construction, have been selected to design and build a 180,000 cubic meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank in the Netherlands.

This project falls within the programme to expand the storage capacity and regasification of the GATE (Gas Access To Europe) terminal, based in the port of Rotterdam, by making it possible to supply an additional 4 billion cubic meters of gas each year.

Gas Access to Europe (GATE) is the Netherlands’ first liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal and opened in September 2011. It is a major port for LNG deliveries into Europe.

LNG has become a major alternative to pipeline gas after Russia reduced its pipeline gas deliveries to the European Union by 80 per cent in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine last year.

The project involves the construction of a new 180,000 cubic meter LNG storage tank with a nickel steel inner tank and a post-tensioned concrete outer container.

The contract, worth €160 million (US$178 million), is scheduled for completion by the second half of 2026.

Vinci Construction Grands Projets said that between 2007 and 2011, it had built three 180,000 cubic meter LNG storage tanks for this same client, each under design-build contracts.
